Kitchen Design Trends 2022

This month marked the physical return of KBIS, the leading kitchen and bath design event organized by the National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA). Industry leaders shared new products, techniques, and upcoming trends throughout this event. Some of this year’s trends were identified in a presentation by Kerrie Kelly of Kerrie Kelly Design Lab.

The top three trends for 2022 identified by Kelly are:

1) Technology

2) Nature Inspired Design

3) European influence

Technology

There seems to be a technology solution or advancement for each room in our homes, from surround sound systems, automatic vacuum cleaners, and home tech systems. Technology trends in the kitchen revolve around easing or perfecting the cooking process.

Here are a few trending technology ideas for the modern kitchen environment.

For example, enhance your cooking skills with Gourmet Guided Cooking technology, from GE, which walks you through step-by-step recipes. With the in-oven live streaming camera, you see what’s cooking, all from the GE SmartHQ app. No more oven-hover!

The SmartHQ App from GE has the following key features.

Remote Control – remotely monitor and control your SmartHQ enabled appliances so you can do things like turn your oven on when you are heading home.

Voice Control – Select SmartHQ enabled Appliances to work with both Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant — now you can multitask with ease!

Notifications – Receive helpful alerts from your smart appliance that tell you when your oven is done preheating or if you left the refrigerator door open.

Service Alerts – Get notified if your appliance needs attention.

Software Updates – Keep your smart appliance up-to-date and access new features for your smart appliance as soon as they become available

Smart Technology is a clear kitchen trend.

How about a way to monitor the inside of your oven while in the process of cooking something. A smart phone paired with a smart oven is a nice match.

AI now enters the kitchen. How about an AI system to provide you with a grocery list, recipe guidance, and entertainment ideas and capabilities.

A new kitchen technology to be launched at KBIS was Cooksy. This visual and thermal sensor can be mounted above a cooktop. This system helps you by monitoring the pan and guiding you through recipe completion.

Nature-Inspired Design

From natural colors, textures, and woods, a top 2022 design trend is nature-inspired. One popular way of adding texture is the addition of natural-looking metals such as copper. Another way is to use a paint color that is also inspired from nature.

Even Benjamin-Moore’s color of the year is light earthy green.

“Make room for creativity.

Evoking the silver-green stem of a flower,

October Mist creates a canvas for other colors –

and your imagination – to blossom.”

Natural wood is also trending. What better way to implement it into the home than with natural wood cabinetry. This is a view of cherry cabinets.

European Influence

A European influence is now being considered on this side of the Atlantic. Perhaps some simple accent such as lighting fixtures is all you may need. Clean lines, simplicity, and highly functional design are what people now desire.

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, home functionality has become a high priority for most people. The kitchen has transformed into a work-from-home office, online classroom, and so much more. Designing for these new uses should be a high priority when starting a remodel or new build.
